What important architectural principle of construction in the make-up of the shell of the egg gives it unusual resistance to pressure from without?

The arch. Force from within equals the force from without.

An egg shell, looking at it under a microscope is as if a fiber was woven around the egg in layers going all different directions. That is what gives it strength. But it is also needs moisture when in an incubator to keep the shell moist so that the embryo will not dry out before it is hatched. That is why moisture need to be in the incubator with the eggs.
