horses and way overripe field oats
Posted by kelly in tx at 2015-06-18 20:25:50
Spring has been very wet. I was able to combine about half of an 8-10 acre field of oats. Now, lots of weeds in the other half and still WAY TOO WET even if it was clean enough to combine. Can I safely turn the horses in to graze or do I need to disc, plow, shred, etc. first so the horses don't overeat and kill themselves??? What would you do?

I'd wait for it to dry up and mow it. then run it through you conbine. Might not get much but it would be better then a snowbank or fence post feed.

I'd do what Dale said. Or mow it and bale it. I don't think the horses would "over eat" and get in trouble because they aren't going to get just the grain. Still, the straw would be worth more here than the grain, so I'd wait for dry weather.

You might consider bailing it for emergency hay.

I'm in the same camp as those who suggest to cut it and bale it.

I think you could graze it or bale it. They aren't going to overeat on oats. If was wheat, then you would need to be more cautious.
