Icelandics?
Posted by Stephen Leslie at 2015-06-15 11:00:40
Hello all,
I am doing some research for an article on Icelandic horses and wondering if anyone here has experience using them for farm work?
Thanks
Stephen

I was fascinated by the Icelandics and their ability to tolt... until I found out their price.

Just watched a video of the tolt pace. Makes a believer out of me. That is the smoothest pace I have ever seen.

My sister was considering getting one, the prices were way beyond what she could afford, so she bought a Paso Fino instead.

My son-in-law's family raises them, they are quite the little horse, with a darn good work ethic.
If I were looking for a small team I wouldn't be afraid to try them.

I had and Icelandic I was planning to use with my fjord. I drove them each single and he was coming along quite nicely but was never able to put them together as I had to put my fjord down. They are very powerful little horses and highly underrated in my opinion, which may be due to the fact there aren't that many around and the ones that are around get ridden not driven. I found a new home for him as I acquired a new team of fjords but really wish I kept him. I did some research and found they are used for farming in Iceland and work very well. They are smaller than fjords but primarily in leg length, not so much in body size. He was a big bellied (not fat) sweet boy with a fabulous temperament and incredibly smooth to ride. If given the chance I would not hesitate to put together a team of Icelandics for small scale farming and logging. They, like fjords, can be costly but acquired as pups can be quite affordable. I may have rambled but hopefully helped. Looking forward to your article as I love those guys like fjords.

There is a farm with a whole lot of Icelandics in my neighborhood. Cytraas Farm. They are very cute but all I ever see is them in an overgrazed pasture. Maybe they drive them but I never see it. I'd love to see some working.

I have one boarded here. He was purchased as an undersized, unhandled, 4YO cryptorchid colt. I trained him to ride and to drive single. A great little horse full of heart and character, but a I find this one at least to be a bit energetic for farmwork like plowing. Great road horse, though.
