Ouch!

One of my wifes dairy goats broke her rear leg. We're dealing with it and I think she's got a good chance to recover. What amazes me is the ability of an animal to function despite such an injury. She's escaped from 2 pens so far and we finally had to corner her in a 5 foot high jug to keep her slowed down.

Man is such a wimp compared to his livestock. I wonder if the Banamine is more for soothing my pain than hers...

When I was a kid I had a neighbor who had a goat that lost a front leg below the knee. They somehow fixed a wood peg leg to her. It didn't keep her from climbing fences or any other obstacle in the yard. They don't know they're at a disadvantage.
Good luck with your goat!

We had a goat that broke a front leg jumping a gate (got it's leg caught as it went over the top). We splinted it with some door shims, cardboard and duct tape ...... worked out pretty good.

Bill - I agree with you RE: humans=wimps. Our Pyrenees-cross dog had a rear leg amputated due to osteosarcoma (bone cancer). When we brought her home literally hours after the surgery, she shot passed us out the door, jumped off the porch and "ran" to dip in her favorite spot in the pond. I think they crave normalcy over worrying about pain.

It's amazing isn't it? FWIW- "Chloe" the goat seems to be healing okay. Shes still nursing a gargantuan buckling and hobbles around a bit. We've kept her in a 4x5 foot jug to keep her still until last night. Moved her into a larger, breezier area due to the hot, humid weather. We ended up using 4" PVC sewer pipe for the "cast", packed with cotton batting and secured it all with the farmers favorite too- duct tape. I'm giving it till about the 4th of July to heal. If the leg isn't healed by then we'll likely put her down.
