collar fit
Posted by Nate at 2015-04-22 17:48:28
Something I have not seen discussed is the collar sizing with a pad. If a horse measures a 25 then I assume it probably will not fit if you wear a pad on him. So is there a method to what size to upgrade to if you want a pad?

Get an adjustable collar with leeway to add the pad if needed.

We only use pads to assure good collar fit. A pad will both shorten and make the sides tighter. 1/2 pads are used to not change length but just to tighten sides. You can make 1/2 pads by cutting about 3 inches out of the top, 1-1/2 from center on each side. Then sew the ends shut Having a few sets of half pads around is very helpfull. We will never own any adjustable collars but keep several fixed sizes on the wall. The hames just don't fit well on adjustable collars. Might be fine if you are not doing real work. The newer vinyl pads seem to work well.

Go to page 42 of the Feb issue of Rural Heritage, and there is about 10 pages of info on pads & fitting
