Galloway Cattle

Has any one raised Galloway cattle. Thoughts good, bad, would you buy them? There was 4 bred cows listed for sale on Kijiji, and got me thinking about getting a couple. From what I’ve read they are good mothers. I agree with Catherine about sticking with cattle you can unload at the auction ring, but hopefully we would just eat them.

My youngest daughter showed Belted Galloways as feeders (smaller framed for a judge's choice and of course not an angus). Showed in cow and calf (won Grand Champion) showed in county bred (won that a couple of times). Good mothers, easy keepers, everyone will call you the people with the "oreo cows". Very good meat. Probably won't sell top of the sale in the local auction, but fed well, will score well and be quite tender and delicious.

some of the packers don't like the long hair, otherwise about like a Angus cow mabie not as snoty as the Angus.

They was supposed to survive tougher winters than Angus 100 years ago. You could hide them in the angus if they weren't belted.

The Breeder's association farm down the road has a Galloway teaser steer. It's massive! And in a meaty, angus way. And my girls do call him "the Oreo cow".

Galloway is an ancient breed. Good temperament, very hardy, excellent mothers, grass-based genetics will marble well without as much concentrates as modern beef. If you want to help preserve heritage breeds and their gene pools, you've got that too. I'm all for the heritage breeds. I'm a small direct-market producer, and cattle trainer, and preserving genetics is important to me. I would never have a modern angus for a few reasons. Notoriously difficult temperament being the main one, along with not feeding corn, and not preferring the taste.
