Turkey Poult - Is this Splat-Leg?
Posted by Catherine in VA at 2015-04-16 20:48:51
I was at my local feed store buying my bi-weekly batch of meat birds. They were scrambling because a huge shipment of heritage breed turkey poults had arrived a day early. The clerk asked me if I wanted some free turkeys. She had 3 poults tucked in their own box because they were unable to stand. We figured them surviving was a long-shot, but that they'd have more luck at my house.

One died within hours. It looked like something went wrong with it absorbing the yolk, if that makes sense. The survivors both exhibit neurological issues. The bourbon red might make it. He was kind of scooting backwards at first. But after drinking sugar water from a dropper, he is moving largely normal. The white poult's legs work - he can push against my hand. but it still can't stand. It spins on it's side with it's legs out stiff. If I hold it up, it tries to stand on tip toe. Even so, he's hungry. He's gobbling down boiled egg and sugar water. Seems to do best if I hold the food up over his head so he stretches his neck to get it.

Does this sound like splat-leg? I thought the bird's legs would stick out at an angle if they have that. I'm assuming these little guys all suffered some incubation issue. I'll cull tomorrow if they get worse. Would be nice if the bourbon red makes it, though. Feed store was charging $13 each :-0

Could be a B vitamin deficiency. If so feeding some beef liver could help.
