New Mule
Posted by Jerry Hicks at 2015-03-29 07:47:18
Traded for a new mule yesterday. I wasn't really in the market for another mule but one of my Amish friends who had moved away sent his neighbor up to talk to me. It seems the guy had been working a mule and a horse together to a wagon and wanted a horse to match the one he was working. The Amish friend told him I had such a horse and that I like mules. He brought the mule up and we talk a while and traded. The mule is a bay horse mule, about 15.2, 8 year old, broke to ride and drive. So far he seems like a pretty decent mule. Just letting him settle into the place right now and get used to my routines. Hope to start trying him to a sled soon and then maybe he'll go into the cultivator by this summer.

Congratulations on the new mule! I have a pair myself. Great animals they are.

Maybe it should, but the color doesn't tell me if your new mule is out of a draft horse or a light horse. Best wishes anyway!

Bartering can be a wonderful thing. Good luck Jerry.

Klaus, I didn't see where he was questioning whether the mule was from a draft horse or light horse. All I read was that he just describing the mule as a bay horse (male) mule. Please don't take this personal.

Don't really know what he's out of. The former owner didn't either. In my opinion, if I was pressed to make a guess, I'd say he's out of what we'd call a little mountain type mare, maybe with a good bit of morgan in her back ground. He's about 15.2, but solid made with a good deep chest, he's got a lot of bone and my Grandpa would have called him a "fancy lookin'" mule. He'd look better at a buggy than a plow. So far he seems to be a good natured mule and I'm taking the time to let him settle in and get used to me and the other mules. Keeping him up in the barn right now and have been turning him out in the round pen with an older mule during the day. I plan to work him some with this mule, maybe, and that mule has a real good attitude and might be a good influence on him. The older mule is completely unflappable and about as bomb proof as a mule can be. The new mule is a little snorty and curious but right now, I'm taking that to be a good thing. He's easy caught and knows his name and will come to me when called, so I think we are getting off on the right foot.

Gary, I certainly don't take this personal. I was just curious if Jerry got himself a draft mule or a saddle mule and oftentimes when you know the color you can assume if the mule came from a Belgian or Percheron mare.
