JD grain drill
Posted by Geoff at 2015-03-28 10:53:26
I picked up an old JD Van Brunt grain drill but have no manual or other information --- particularly about setting the seeding rate. No model number but it's a 6 ft single disc openers on 6 inch centers. Galvanized seed box and has a grass seed box. I can see how to adjust the grass seed setting but the grain box looks to have a small lever on the gear box with ~ 4 or 5 positions on it. I know I could probably block it up and spin the wheel a certain number of times and catch the seed. Then calculate "pounds per acre" .... like a fertilizer spreader. Any other thoughts?

I think I still have a chart for that drill. If you would share your email address I could send it to you.

Yeah, I was going to say, if you could get someone who has the chart to send a picture ... I have a JD drill with well preserved chart, but different model, set up differently than it seems yours is, Geoff.

Thanks "Flying G." Here's my e-mail info.

The guy I bought the drill from said he just let the seed drop from the grass seed box behind the drill instead of using the seed tubes and openers. Granted, he didn't have any grass seed tubes to use but anyone else done something similar? I know I could rig up some hose or tubing to get the small seed down to the openers but is it worth it or does dropping it work just as well?

As long as it is not too windy you should have no problem. Most grass seed tubes don't go all the way down to the openers anyway.
