Farm Question 3/25/2015

In the earlier days the term "Shanghai Rooster" was commonly used in referring to what bird?

Isn't that a term used in the song, "Sweet Betsy from Pike?"

I think so Carl, but I didn't know if there were any tall things in that part of the world. Next question, how did he get to Pike?

Cochin males.

I remember my grandmother singing Sweet Betsy From Pike. As a kid I thought they were talking about Pike county Kentucky, but have since read it was likely Pike county Missouri. Betsy and her husband, Ike, traveled with "two yoke of cattle,an old yaller dog, a shanghai rooster and a old spotted hog." I imagine he might have been a poland china and I always figured the dog was a cur.

Don't remember how he got there. I only remember something about an old cur dog, a spotted hog, and a shanghai rooster.
