For Don McAvry

Don..I read your question to Klause about using the 200lb feed tubs for growing things in. I have used them for several years mostly for peppers but some tomatoes such as the cherry tomatoes that I can keep close to the house for the wife to get when she wants them. Drill about 4 holes in the side of them about 3 inches up from the bottom. These are drain holes but it leaves a shallow reservoir in the bottom to hold a small amount of water that will wick up to the roots if gets to dry on top. In this country I water them everyday as we have really hot dry winds by midsummer but once in a while I miss and the water in the bottom will hold them over until the next day. I water them until the water is running out of the bottom. Use good dirt in them,I use compost and they will serve you well.

I would use those plastic tubs if I had access to them, but I don't. Instead, I use metal water tanks that no longer hold water. Some have hardly any bottom to them at all. They make splendid raised beds!

I have used the plastic barrels with hole in the bottom mistake the holes in the bottom attract tree roots. The holes in the side make a lot of sense keep tree roots out.
