Googled "sputnik" and "milking" and "cows" and got a few hits. Here is some text from one of them which mentions "sputnik: as a milking transfer cart used by Amish in Wisconsin:

"The last time I spent regular time milking a herd of cows, I used surge buckets and carried the pails of milk to the milk house -and poured them into the strainer on top of the bulk tank. I thought it was a good, low cost system! Didn't mind the manual labor. Don't see many of those “step saver” conveyor systems around barns anymore, but do see those fancy “sputnik” transfer carts on the Amish farms in my neighborhood -and think those folks are really getting the advanced equipment over my experience!"

Back in the 70's we used one. Our bulk tank was 50 feet from the barn in a separate building. There was over 125 feet of hose to string across yard and barn. Started with Surge buckets changed to Delaval floor bucket. To me they did a better job and the cows seemed to like them.

I was ten when the Russians launched the first satellite into orbit in October of 1957. We learned about it on the radio and in school since my family at that time didn't have TV.

We didn't have much in the way of evening entertainment either Klaus, so several of the families in our community would gather at a neighbor's farm and watch for sputnick. My Dad was always the first to spot it, and my sister and I thought he was brilliant!

the Russian Sputnik satellite is all that I could think of. The popular Mechanics magazine of April 1957 had a picture of that satellite setting on a dock in New York city the same funny windows on it, different from the USA satellite.

Spudnic is also a brand of potato piler/elevator used around here.

I don’t know how to post pictures. Does the milk cart on the right hand picture on page 39 of Allen’s second book have a name?

Sorry Dick. I am away from the office until January 29. I will try to upload that photo when I get back.
