wood pellets & corn
Posted by KC Fox at 2015-01-12 01:01:34
We bought 2440 lbs of corn at $3.85 per bushel. 2400 lbs of wood pellets cost $3.80 per bag when we bought them. 50% wood pellets 50% corn puts out more heat than just wood pellets, Just starts harder than straight wood pellets. Corn is cheaper than the pellets at that price . we start on wood pellets then switch to the mix.

Wood pellets at our feed store are $6.00 a bag, $260 per ton. Corn prices would beat them by a mile. We spent a few hours in the woods on Sat. with the horses just pulling downed trees. Cut and split for a few hours today, probably used about $2.00 in gas. Ready for bed.

I have a friend who grows tritical to burn in his super duper Swedish furnace. He loves it. I can't get used to burning feed that way for heat, but that's just me I guess. Up to now, we still have trees, and are growing more. But where there are scarce trees, I can see the sense in using annually renewable combustibles in lieu of dirtier fuels that are nonrenewable.

The only problem with any solid fuel system is the people out there doing their best to get pretty much anything that will keep you warm outlawed. They will be the death of us in the cold part of the country.
