A cheap mule
Posted by Jerry Hicks at 2014-12-15 05:44:09
I sold some cull cows in town this weekend and found myself having to set on my hands. They ran a good looking mule through the ring. There were no recommendations but he looked to be a young mule but stood and handled pretty calmly. I would have guessed him to be a Walking horse cross mule given the area in which we live and his build. He sold for 35.00.

Good thing my wife wasn't there or I would be building a new stall today.

Should have aired those hands and taken him home!

No need to get in a rush Jerry. That's a little high for that mule. Been going to several cow sales lately and most horses and mules are not topping twenty bucks. My cousin hauled a walking horse to a sale a while back for his neighbors and it didn't bring enough to cover coggins and selling. They owed the sale barn eight bucks. Best part was when they left he had two strange horses tied in his trailer. Might need to lock up the trailer instead of the truck next time!

I don't know where they sell that cheap. But the regular monthly horse & mule sale here went to just 4 times a year. the owner of the barn said some of the animals were not paying for the commission for selling them. I haven't went to one of his sales in a year as there was not anything worth buying there just killers.

I would expect that good horses and mules will generally still bring good money. I'm sure there are cases of buying hay or selling a mule and the mule goes especially as we near the holidays. I don't know that the mule I saw wouldn't have kicked my head off. I doubt they sold him because they loved him! But he seemed gentle enough from the back row. And was a fair sized mule for 35.00.

I am looking for a decent sized, quiet mule that can work single in the field and also trot down the road in traffic. Not having much luck. Anyone has a line on something like this please let me know. Thanks.

Just stories, but . . .I've heard a number of the local auction barns throughout the midwest and south to Texas have been selling horses very cheaply for the past several years (since slaughter was banned in the U.S.). I've heard that many don't bring $25 and the killer buyers take 'em free.

You get what you pay for. I don't pay attention to light horse trends but good sound well bred productive heavy horses are not cheap by any means.

well broke good riding horses and mules aren't cheap either. Neither are the hospital bill that can come with the other kind if you choose to try and use those. I have never bought the well broke bomb proof kind of either one. Have always used the horses & mules no one else wanted. Bought a riding mule 2 years ago haven't found any real bad thing about her yet but still looking for a problem. Happy New Year to all of you.
