Winter Cover Crops?
Posted by Catherine in VA at 2014-12-07 18:44:43
The feeder pigs have arrived at my house & are churning up the starter hog pen something ferocious. Once they're trained to electric, I'm going to have them hit the garden. Then on to the front lot that needs clearing.

I got to thinking - is there anything I can plant this time of year in the areas that they've plowed through? Even if it's just something for them to harvest and eat themselves In the spring?

Might still get barley or rye to take in Va. We plant up until Election day here in N.Y.

Would winter wheat take?

On a side note, I can't believe how much stronger these critters are than the guinea hogs I raised last year. They've done in a week what the guineas didn't do in a whole season. As long as I can stay one step ahead of them, they're looking like a valuable land management tool. I have acres that need clearing and churning up so that I can hopefully seed in the spring.

I have been able to sow winter wheat as a cover as late as the end of November here in the northern part of Kentucky and had good luck, but I think it depends a lot on the weather. A mild winter helped I think. I'd say try it. through some wheat down behind the hogs and see what happens. I can guarantee it won't sprout in the bag! but it just might do what you want on the ground. If not you might be able to straw it down and wait for March and get a jump on frost seeding.
