mulch layers & transplanters
Posted by Stephen Leslie at 2014-11-20 21:50:46
Hello folks,
I am writing a book about the tools and systems required for raising produce with draft animal power. I am wondering if anyone has firsthand experience with using a horse drawn plastic mulch layer or transplanter. If so, could please say a bit about how you use these machines, also what qualities you need to see in a horse to be safe working in this situation?
Thanks!

We use the plastic mulch layer and water wheel transplanter. We use mules.

Talk to the Amish produce growers in Ohio. See if you can find contact info for the "TruckPatch" newsletter out of the Mt. Hope area; it goes to all of the commercial growers who use those. Ask to set up some interviews. Also, contact the organizers of Horse Progress Days, specifically the produce guys.
