ground driven equip
Posted by Kirsten(upstate NY) at 2014-11-12 15:52:54
A breeder in Maine told me that Suffolks were no good for ground driven equip because they walk too slow. Any comments or thoughts on this. My team seem a touch slow because they are low energy, but when you chirp they can come right to attention.

Slow walking teams need a different gear ratio than fast walkers. PTO rpm is 540 or 1000. Using a different speed makes any implement not as good as designed.
Ground drive combines sluffed out half the grain going uphill because the horses slowed down and blew half the grain out going downhill because the brakes wouldn't hold them back. A motor solved the problem and they could drop off 6 head.

My team of Suffolk mares walk off about 2 1/2 -3 MPH. I've checked average speeds with a GPS unit I carried with me. I've never had a problem with any ground drive equipment (binders - spreaders). There is more of a problem of too fast at times,as with my old Hoover potato planter, maybe I'm to slow to feed the thing. Mark

The big ground driven carts do need horses of a certain size and ability. They must be in good shape and used to heavy work. It is true the big ground driven cart is not for everyone. However they do a great job with all aspects of duties, you must have the proper horses.

I used to take you seriously Dris, but now you're going to be an Okie.

Yup Wes, but remember what Will Rogers said during the Dust Bowl years. A lot of Okies moved to California and raised the IQ of both states!

A few of the Suffolks we"ve worked with looked slow but they had plenty of stride. As Dris mentioned, your horses need to be in shape as there is constant drag on them when that PTO is engaged.

More ground less people less winter still same guy new address!

I'd say the breeder was trying to sell you something he had and not let you get into Suffolks.

Mark, the ground drive equipment you are referring to are not PTO driven. They work by a revolution for so many inches of travel. So it is a case of apples against oranges.

Hahaha! Good one Dris.

Good luck down there. I have some friends around Mustang and OKC. May run down that way and visit some day.

Sure would love to have you visit
