What causes animals to eat unusual substances such as wood or earth?
Response by Mptclinics in IL at 2014-11-11 09:14:14
Usually mineral deficiencies, but can be caused by boredom or stress.

Had a horse that loved rootbeer and peanuts. Would that be considered "unusual"?
Response by Jerry Hicks at 2014-11-12 05:05:33
Faulty ration, lacking some needed food element.

Grazing stock left out in the winter, will eat brush and woody parts and bark of trees once the grass is covered. I believe that is how they were designed to survive. My horse and mule will trim the brush in the winter even with a round bale in the pasture. They don't seem to bother much in the summer, when the grass is good.
