Are any of you in central FL?

For those of you that recall our Belgian with the injured leg.....it's a long story, but he is now in FL receiving excellent vet care and finally healing nicely. However, he is WAAAY overdue for a hoof trim. His caretaker and vet don't do that type of stuff, so I promised to try to help find assistance. I think the ideal would be someone with a set of stocks who might be willing to trailer him to their place and back for the work. The stocks are something he knows. Stocks or not, we also need a recommendation for a good draft farrier to do the work. The farrier will need to be a very patient person with a little extra time for this job! Nick is doing well, and has come far, but the limitations and fears caused by his original injury are going to make the job less than easy. To be more specific, he is located about 20 minutes east of Ocala. Any recommendations?

I think I would Ace him for this trim.

They probably will use something, but he doesn't react to any of the sedatives used so far like a horse would be expected. He isn't mean, he is just a bit freaked out and "paws" with that injured leg. He is so afraid it is going to be hurt. He turns from a sweet gentle-giant and little bit of an impatient lunatic. He's gotten a LOT better, I just don't know for sure how he's gonna react to someone new messing around down there.

A twitch. before drugs it was used. I did read Heather Smith Tomas said when applied correct it lowered blood pressure and stress also. 1973 I saw a 3 year old stud castrated standing up with a twitch and his tail tied to a wall. head had been roped and halterd. Get somebody that knows how to do it right. Rub his nose after words.
My cousin had a ranch horse that we could only trim his back hooves this way.

As Don says twitch is a great option. Twitch and also grab and twist a handful of ear is also something many horses will react well to.
Doctoring race horses as a teen helping my dad (a veterinarian) we had to find a lot of ways to get the job done without drugs.....

Lass Tompkins has forgotten more about horses than most people will ever learn. Top notch horsewomen and big hitch driver. She never treats a horse like a human and doesn't project human emotions on them as people tend to do. She does however know how to be the Alpha mare and in a horses world that's all there is.
