How is the best way to supply stock with salt?
Response by KC FOX at 2014-10-27 12:12:17
I like to put salt loose in a box, or 11R 24.5 truck tire that is spread apart at the bead about 16" then they hold 5-600 lbs salt when it rains the salt get's hard and last for a long time. I never mix mineral with salt ever. when I feed mineral it is in a separate tire. as summer cattle normaly only eat mineral the first month of the summer and the last month of the summer. the rest of the summer the tire stays full. Most mineral the people use is not good for goats, horses And mules.

I use block salt.
In this country we use trace mineral, iodized salt, and a Sulphur salt (seems too help foot rot) free choice. Blocks are put on the may rocky knows scattered around my pastures. This helps keep the cows moving around using the feed a little more evenly.
Pretty much same boat as kc fox with mineral. They're eating it now. I put it in tubs.

I put a block out and pour a sack into an old mollass protein tub where I want stock to congegate which is usually on the far side from water.

Place loose salt where it can be reached by stock every day.

Question;
Is there any truth regarding using Sulphur salt blocks from spring before the fly season starts and thru the fall to help control flies? I've been told that the fly eggs don't develop in the manure with sulphur.
What is your opinion ?
Bill

I have always heard the same thing but honestly have not used sulfur blocks consistently enough to say. My grandpa always said to put out sulfur blocks in the spring to get rid of lice and I've always done it for that reason but until lately I haven't used sulfur past the louse season.
