Posted by Jerry Hicks at 2014-10-24 05:30:50
Does live stock need the addition of complex mineral mixtures to their normal ration?
Response by NoraWI at 2014-10-24 12:18:26
Don't know what "complex" mineral mixtures was in the '30s, but today the answer is DEFINITELY!
Response by Kate V(Va) at 2014-10-24 15:55:28
Yes.
Response by M. Burley at 2014-10-24 19:39:58
No doubt about it.
Response by Dale Wagner at 2014-10-25 01:27:38
Don't waste your money unless a blood test shows they need it.
Response by KC FOX at 2014-10-25 08:31:28
Dale is right but most people will waste their money without thinking.
Response by NoraWI at 2014-10-25 12:12:40
I waste my money because to blood test 10 critters is much more expensive than a bag of Equishine 3 times a year.
Response by Dale Wagner at 2014-10-26 01:10:35
It usually only takes ONE blood test for a GOOD vet to know what is needed for an area. As long as he don't sell the product, his word usually works.
Over feeding of some elemnts is as bad as not having enough. Commercial mixes usually are a waste of money because you end up over feeding some minerals and not have enough of others.
Response by NoraWI at 2014-10-26 07:52:54
Dale, I have asked for a titer to be done to determine whether I need to vaccinate annually and have been given the very same rationale. My vet does NOT sell the salt & mineral mix, but maybe the vets WANT to vaccinate annually. Frankly, I don't think there is enough of any mineral in the mixes to cause an over supply. You can control by not feeding it too frequently. Here in the Midwest, selenium is of definite concern.
Response by Jerry Hicks at 2014-10-27 05:30:29
No.

The book didn't go into further detail on why they felt there was no need for the minerals. I do have some other books from this time period that may shed some light on it and I will have to get back with what I find.
