llamas and horses
Posted by Greg at 2014-10-22 00:38:21
I have a chance to use some nice pasture that also has a couple llamas grazing on it. Anybody have any experience mixing the two? I recall the same llamas being very interested in my team when I was plowing nearby this past Spring.

I have known a number of folks that house horses and llamas together just fine. Generally, the horses are more dominant, so I would just keep an eye on things for a day or so to ensure the horses aren't going to be a danger to the llamas.

I had two llamas (keeping them for someone else) with my horses and donkeys for a couple of years. They kind of ignored each other. No problems. Llamas, like donkeys, are considered protector animals and will kill encroaching predators. So that's a plus. They spit a foul smelling green goo and kick and slash with their feet. So be careful going into that pasture when caring for your horses before the llamas get to know you. Llamas also "sing." They emit a sound pitch that, if you can imitate it, relaxes them and keeps them happy with you. I learned to "sing" the hard way :). That goo they spit is really disgusting!

I have a llama running with my team now. I use her (the llama) mainly to keep coyotes at bay from newborn calves. Sold the cows and haven't bought any calves lately so she isn't lonely.

My neighbor has two horses, a miniature mule, and three llamas running together. They seem to get along quite well.

Thanks folks. Sounds like it shouldn't be an issue.
