What Size Chains for Plowing?
Posted by Emmy at 2014-10-19 11:06:56
Hello,

So we have a Haflinger gelding. He measures 62 inches from the front of his shoulder to the back of his rump. We're currently needing him for plowing and log skidding (small trees close to home)... What size chain would be best and how many feet would be necessary?

Thank you.

It should be long enough that the single tree doesn't bump his hocks. He should be hooked as short as is possible without the above happening.

Okay, thank you

Out of curiosity, have you done any plowing or log skidding and has your horse?

Maybe you should describe your harness so we can better help you.

Need to know what kind of harness you have. I don't know what you'd need a chain for a plow for. Plows are usually hooked from the clevis to the evener or single tree. For logging small stuff I like 1/4" hi test chainabout16 ft long with a grab hook and ring on one end and a C hook on the other.

If you are talking trace chain....for a 1200 lb. mule they were around 7 foot..with a ring on one end and several bigger links for adjustment....I make mine for my smaller mules with a a heavy quick link and ring on the single tree end, and a ring and snap link for the hame end...bigger mule/horse stouter chain, heavier hardware...

If your talking logging chain.......I get a heavy high test binder chain...stronger the better....a snapping chain has killed a many a person
