Gear Ratio
Posted by T Sigmon at 2014-10-19 07:17:50
Any body have an idea of the gear ratio on an Athens tread mill? I'm tinkering with an idea of a horse powered wood splitter. If anybody has has suggestions or ideas let me know.

Your horse will walk about 2MPH so how many times will the drive have to turn to go at 2mph. The one I seen at horse progress days was about 30 inches in dia. This works out about 8 feet of travel per rev. That makes about 1300 revs in an hour or 200 per minute. So put a pump direct on the bull gear. Add a valve to stop the flow so you can load a horse in it. Open the valve to feed the splitter.
I sure would only build it out of a junk yard as I don't give it much chance to power a splitter but iit could power a cream seperator, water pump or ice cream maker. Building the chain and the sprokets would require mostly new material.

Where's Jason Rutledge? Pretty sure they were splitting firewood at the gathering last year with an Athens Tread Mill. Looked like it was working great.

They have been splitting wood with a treadmill at HPD for years and years and more years. I guess you are just wanting to make your own version?

Yeah, I like to tinker and would like to make my own version. I have made a horse power out of an old school bus rear end that I use to power a C.S. Bell steel burr mill to grind corn and it works pretty well. Got it turning the mill @ about 180 rpm s . I watched some You Tube videos on the Athens mill and the wood splitter looks like a mechanical type, kinda like the DR rack and pinion splittter.
