Looking for Belgian fillies
Posted by Woody at 2014-10-15 21:46:07
I am toying with the idea of buying a pair of closely related fillies by the end of this year or spring/summer 2015. I would be looking for yearlings or weanlings. Preference would be strawberry roan or sorrel. Any leads for the Northeast region would be greatly appreciated!

An Amish gent called me the other day, he had a roan weanling filly. Could be a little hitchy out of a Korry's Captain Daughter, sire is out of Maple Lawn Scott's Dream. He only has the one and is located in Southern Ontario .

Even though he's not in the northeast, you need to call Charlie Dush of Duncan, NE. I would venture to say that he has more roan horses than anyone else in this country, and they are true roans, not sorrels with a few roan hairs. They are working type horses, not hitchy at all. Charlie plowed with 6 young geldings on a gang plow this summer, and has had as many as 10 on a 4 bottom, and raises the kind that people like to use. His phone number is 402-843-0539. I have pictures that I can e-mail you (I never have been able to get pictures posted to the Porch) if you are interested in seeing the kind he raises. You would not be disappointed.

Sharon, that sounds good; I would like to see them. Strawberry roan is my favorite! Thanks also Steve, I'll check into them as well.

Woody, there is a guy down in Clymer, N.Y. who raises roan Belgians. Met him this past spring down in Pa. Nice guy. Call me at 315-923-4730, I'll give you his info.
Steve, would like to know more about that filly if possible?

Do roans breed true? Is roan a dominate gene? I got a beautiful filly this spring by Captain Buddy, with no roan in her immediate pedigree. Buddy is sorrel as is the filly's Dam by Colleddie Diamond. The Diamond mare is bred the same way for next spring and I have no great expectations that I will get another roan.
