rope and pully set up
Posted by wally b at 2014-10-06 22:28:20
I have been using the rope and pulley for 4 and 6 up and really like it. The only problem I have had is when I have the wheelers on a tongue, if they get too far forward they can pull on the tongue with the neck yoke. I have it chained on.

I have read in the Big Teams in Montana that for the rope and pulley they used back then they recommended sewing big iron rings in the ropes to prevent the wheelers from getting too far forward--the ring is sewn in on the opposite side of the pulley (on the leader side) so if they get too far forward they pull the whole load.

Does anyone use rings like this?

Thanks

Wally

You can adjust your trace chains and your lines to avoid that

buck back your wheelers so they cant pull off of the tongue---i do this all the time even with four abreast on the out side horses if they are too assertive

I have adjusted the traces as follows, shortened the wheelers traces and lengthened the leaders out. I still have to hold the wheelers back to keep them back. The wheelers are the less assertive of the horses, but they are generally about the same in that regard.

Arlie, I am curious where you would buck back to in a rope hitch.

May have the wrong horses as wheelers. Also line adjustments can help

i would try some zip ties with big washers first to see if it would work

Putting a stop on the rope will work the same as a stay chain. A cable clamp works for this purpose.

use a long enough buck back rope and tie off even on your implement/forecart etc
