Response by Dale Wagner at 2014-09-11 01:13:05
Span is a line of animal between the leaders and wheelers. Might be a couple as in a 6 up or 6 animals as in the combine hitch of 27 which is 6 wheelers, 6 in the back span, 6 in the middle span, 6 in the lead span and 3 leaders.

A rather old term used in place of team i.e.,a span of horses or a span of mules.
