Farm Question 9/4/2014

In speaking of animal feed, what is meant by roughage?

Indigestible fiber that provides bulk. Can't imagine what fiber would be indigestible to a ruminant. Maybe that's why their feces are runny all summer and don't get anywhere close to solid until they go on hay or the grass becomes virtually "hay on the hoof"?

Roughage is such bulky feeds as hay, cornstalks, and straw.

But yes, ultimately, it is fiber.
