nightshade
Posted by Marshall at 2014-08-22 11:07:53
Yesterday I threshed my oats and I found a few nightshade berries in them. I plan on feeding the oats to my horses and beef calves. Any suggestions for removing the nightshade berries? how critical is it to get every last one out?

Try to find a good used seed cleaner. Should be able to eliminate all berries. I wouldn't take any chances.

At one time I had an old seed cleaner that would do what you need. It had a hopper on top that the grain was poured in. Then underneath this was a series of screens and under then screens were drawers to collect the grain. Chaff was removed by a drum fan blowing across the screens. A crank on the side powered the fan and a pitman running from this crank to an arm on the front rocked the screens back and forth to shake them up. It could be cranked by hand,by v-belt and engine or it had an attachment to use a tread mill with a dog or goat. Around this area those things can be picked up fairly cheap. In some areas they are also called a fanning mill.

I do have a clipper 1B fanning mill that I have never used. Looks like I will be digging it out and seeing if I have the right screens. Thanks fellas.
