In what city is the worlds largest stockyards located?
Response by NoraWI at 2014-08-14 10:04:53
Today, probably Sioux City, Iowa. In 1932, I would think Chicago, Illinois.
Response by Wes Lupher at 2014-08-14 10:55:02
In 1935 I'm guessing Omaha.

I would think South St Paul would be in there too
Response by Carl Byerly at 2014-08-14 12:18:19
Probably Chicago.

Denver or Chicago would have been big at that time as well. But I am going with Wes on this one and say Omaha.

The one in little ol Spokane covered over 240 acres back in the 30's. Feeding in transit was the reason for the size. Takes a lot of room to feed cattle, hogs were taken to water and corn throwed back into the cars so they would load back. Spokane had one engine just to shuttle cars. That 28 hours rule where you had to unload and water and feed them. I can't remember the hours that they had to rest before going on.
Santa Fee had a hog train that ran from Omaha to LA almost a day faster than the passenger train.

Chicago.

Interesting information Dale. Reading my great great grandmothers journals she talked about the men taking a cattle/sheep drive to Rock Springs, Wyoming to catch the train. My grandpa talked about how fun it was to be the one that got to ride to Denver or Omaha with the livestock. I wish I would have asked more questions about the trip. KM

Does anybody know where the Kansas City Stock Yards would have ranked in the 30s?
Response by Joaker at 2014-08-16 07:19:41
Nora: The Sioux City stock yards closed over 10 years ago. Sioux Falls is a shadow of it's former self, There's a pretty good sale barn south of Sioux Falls in Canton, just off I-29. Several of the order buyers went together and built it.
