JEB in non Belgian or Belgian derivitives or crosses
Posted by Cheri at 2014-07-26 15:36:56
Has anyone ever had a non Belgian (non Belgian cross, non Belgian derivative breed) draft foal born with JEB? In other words, has anyone ever had a Shire, Clyd, Percheron, etc, born with JEB? I don't believe the mutation exists in non Belgian breeds but someone has told me otherwise. I thought JEB was only in Belgians and a type in Saddlebreds. And of course Quarter horses have HERDA, which is a different gene mutation.

Thank you!

I had never heard of JEB. I then looked it up and it looks awful! How common is it? It would be heartbraking to have a foal with that condition.

Many years ago Telleen was worried about concentrating genetics through AI. Now it has happened in horses, beef and dairy cattle. Horses being the smallest gene pool it will come back to haunt us. Good thing is they can now identify most markers. Nothing against AI or a breed of horse; but the Belgians have done wonders to identify it. Still good horses just don't breed a carrier. Double bad if the mate would be a carrier.
