Farm Question 7/23/2014
Posted by Jerry Hicks at 2014-07-23 05:18:54
Was the Hereford or the Shorthorn introduced into the United States first?

I would venture a guess on Shorthorn or Durham cattle as being introduced first. I only say this as most the early cattle photos I have seen appear to be roans. But purely a guess.

The Shorthorn.

I read somewhere the Shorthorn cattle where first brought to Plymouth colony but the breeds website give 1783 as the import date and says they came to Virginia. Henry Clay brought the first Hereford cattle to America, bringing them to Kentucky in 1817. The cattle descending from Clay's cattle were called 17's for years after, referring to the date of the original import.
