pin on the pitman wheel sheared off
Posted by Greg Bush at 2014-07-14 20:40:49
On my McCormick-Deering No. 9 mower the pin on the pitman wheel that connects to the pitman broke off flush to the wheel and I can't get it out. What's the best way to disassemble it short of a hammer and acetylene torch?

Greg,

My #7 book shows a hole in the shaft. This is not an exploded parts view, just drawings of the part with a number. There is not a listing for the pin (if there is one that might go through the flywheel.

B. W. Macknair & Sons may have a reprint of the #9 book. He would at least be a resource to call if you cannot find an answer elsewhere.

After I posted last night I realized that I gave the wrong part info. The shaft with the hole is coming out of the gear box. The wrist pin (to the pitman stick) does not have a hole. It is pressed into the flywheel. A machine shop would be able to press the old one out and make a new one.

I had one that needed a new wrist pin, Todd heated the old one up with the torch and we drove it out, no trouble. I drove a new one in the hole and used a hammer to peen the back over. So far that has worked, even though a machine peening it would have been nice. All the mower repair places sell the wrist pins, no need to have one made at big expense.

Thanks for the info. We're going to take it up to the Amish and have them fix it. It's actually quite a simple process it turns out but I can't figure out how to get the bevel nut off. Gotta take the shaft out so the flywheel comes out to punch out the pin.

Bevel nut? You mean the gear on the pitman shaft? You must not have studied Lynn Miller's mower book. Where are you located?
