Where is neatsfoot oil obtained?
Response by Carl Byerly at 2014-07-10 12:15:19
From a neat foot - NO, it's made from cows' feet and sometimes from other bones.
Response by Jerry Hicks at 2014-07-11 05:32:31
From shin bones and feet of cattle.

I read somewhere that "neat" is an old English word for Cattle.

Hmmm... I thought that *kine* was the Old English word for cattle.
Response by Jerry Hicks at 2014-07-11 12:23:49
Kine is also an old word for cattle. I looked it up in Websters just to get the details and here is what I found: Neat(3) an animal of the genus Bos; a bovine, as a cow or ox [bef. 900; ME neet; OE neat,]

And for Kine, Archaic, a pl of cow [ME kyn, OE cyna gen. pl. of cu cow]

I thought it was interesting that Kine was a plural of cu (pronounced coo) as cu is also the Pennsylvania Dutch word for cow, and the plural is Kee. I also thought it was interesting that my internet connection is so slow that I was able to look this up in an honest to goodness dictionary faster than Merriam-Websters could open on my computer!
