help with ideas, please
Posted by kelly in tx at 2014-04-16 09:46:52
I hope this explanation can become somewhat clear. my wife wants an electric gate opener for our driveway entrance. we enter from the road and our driveway is about a 45 degree turn. our double gates (two 16' gates)open inward, and we just want to open one--the far one, except for WIDE loads. BUT we enter at a "slant"/"Y" of about 45 degrees, so that a gate just opening at 90 degrees won't work. I don't want to open the other way because that'd be opening across the road, thus blocking it for awhile. I don't like that idea. How can I get an opener to open more than 90 degrees? Thanks for the ideas. kelly

Maybe get one that slides instead of swings? Like a pocket door instead of one on hinges.

If I am remebering correctly, you should be able to mount your opener closer to the hinge on the gate. That will give you more travel. The only issue I can see would be mounting the other end of the opener for clearance.

Move the gates farther into the driveway so truck and trailer can be in the drive/off the road before getting to the gate. Then you have a regular gate opener needed. (This is only relevant information if I have interpreted your situation correctly)

Move the gates farther up the road and square with the road, not the property line.

I'm with Jonathan Shively and Dale Wagner... The additional benefit of having an *inset* gate is that the vehicle is off the road while waiting for the gate to open.

Ditto what Jonathon and Dale posted. That was my first thought.

Thanks all for the ideas. moving the gates is not an option. in this soil we sink steel pipe posts 4' into the ground, but thanks for trying to help. kelly

That ain't any worse than many places. All you neen is 20pound bar and a tin cup.

The Apollo gates I installed on my front entrance have an adjustable travel. They will operated a good deal more or less than 90 degrees. The adjustment is a simple dial on each motor.
I don't understand your answer about moving the gates in. How deep you have to sink the posts would not seem to have anything to do with where the gate is mounted.
Moving your gates in far enough that they would be mounted just as the land began to rise would have the further advantage of allowing the gates to open out without interfering with the lay of the land.
