An Excellent Book
Posted by Klaus Karbaumer at 2014-04-12 21:38:08
As I am putting together a list of books that I recommend to the participants in my "Draft Horse Seminars for Market Gardeners" I came upon 'Draft Horses And Mules' by Gail Damerow & Alina Rice. I can only say that I think for novices this is easily one of the best and most comprehensive books I have ever read , covering pretty much every aspect of draft horse keeping and working that one can imagine. It is written in exactly the right kind of tone for people beginning with drafts and even for long-time teamsters a joy to read.
This doesn't take away anything from all the other good books and publications in this field.

Klaus, I agree with you. This was the first book I bought before I took the plunge and even still flip back through it from time to time.

Klaus, I like what you are doing. You might look at Linda Tellington-Jones books. She has worked with a variety of horses and does an excellent job with teaching or training (or whatever term you like) horses and people. The "problems" are usually the people not the horses.

Gene, I have one book by her. I thought she was more into riding horses than drafts , but certainly her training advice is dependable. I do not tell the participants in my seminars that they should try training horses, since most of them are novices in the field, I rather tell them to get good, older horses that have done already what they expect to be doing with them. Beginners and inexperienced horses is a really bad mix.
