Harness Question
Posted by Linda at 2010-03-08 09:39:27
I bought a new harness that has a square metal piece on the end of the traces. I don't know how to use it! My old harness had a slot in the leather that slipped over the whiffle tree (correct word?). I don't know what to do with this metal piece. Does it slide over the whiffle tree? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks - Linda

Sounds like you have traces that are made for a carriage with a spinster bar (wooden bar across the front of the 5th wheel) that has posts about 2" tall. To use the trace you double the trace back threw the square and drop it over the post and pull it tight, This post will have a top on it large enough so the trace can not come off.

Does part of it look something like the pic below? If no, maybe a pic of what you have would help. The pic below is added to the end of the trace or tug and is called a "heel chain"

does it have a tab of leather off the opposite side where the trace is attatched?

The square peice goes at the end of the tug . The other links hook to you single tree .

If it looks like the photo below, it is a trace-end designed for use with roller bolts or round whiffletrees.

You should be able to use it with your bayonette-style (also called sword-style) whiffletree. Make sure your traces are nice and snug. You might also want to fashion a sort of safety, to prevent the loop from coming off the end of your whiffletree. If this is a harness you will be using for a while, you might consider replacing your whiffletree. An easy task, however, finding a whiffletree designed for roller-bolt trace ends might not be so simple.

A freind of ours has a set of harness that has the same square buckle but it also has a slot before and after the buckle. You may be able to add slots to yours.

Ah! So simple it hurts! Good solution!

I think I would check with the seller and see if they would swap out the tugs. If not I'm with bv, cut your own slots in them.
