I got an e-mail today to be a freind to Rural Heritage on face book. Wow life sure seem to be moving to face book.

Thanks for asking me

Me, too. Thanks.

When RH is on facebook, that is definitely a sign of the times, haha. I joined as I AM A FAN!!! I tried to add a few people as well, but soon grew tired. I would love to connect with those of you on the porch too. You will have to search for me under Commissioner Will Beattie. Let me know that you are from the porch and I will add you.
Response by NoraWI at 2010-03-08 06:18:45
Don't we all have enough contact and meaningful discussions on the Porch? I found the invite and deleted it as spam. The Facebook nonsense is just that... nonsense! Bah, humbug! Y'all go ahead. I'll pass.
Response by JWM at 2010-03-08 07:10:31
ya, facebook is so full of gimmicks to get your info, and info on your friends. I prefer to meet folks here on the porch.

We have joked that Facebook Inc is actually the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). What better scheme for collecting info on millions of people.

And, of course, that is precisely why the front porch remains a place where people can post without being required to register and adopt user names, passwords, etc.

Our facebook page is simply another place for people to visit with one another, and in the process, generate additional interest in, and exposure to the magazine, and hopefully net a few more subscriptions.

In these times when printed periodicals are being regularly forced to reduce their page counts, coverage, and overall quality -- not to mention going out of business altogether -- it is important for magazines like ours to pursue marketing opportunities as they become available. A presence on facebook is one of those opportunities.

I have a hard enough time dealing with technologies on this forum. Can't say I would participate on the Facebook deal
Response by jwaller at 2010-03-08 12:42:29
O.K.-I admit. I really don't know much about Facebook. Grandkids put me on it and I can answer when e-mail says they've sent me a message or wrote on the wall (whatever that means).
Response by Dale Wagner at 2010-03-08 13:01:38
I don't do anything on face book, twitter, you tube, or any other of the social networks. Be damned if I am going to sit here for 12 hours to get something to download.
It pisses me off when one of my kids asks me to watch some stupid video on face book or other places. So to polite, I ask them to send me a DVD of it. Last time I asked, they sent it in a form I couldn't open so I threw it away (CDs shatter just like clay pigeons).
I guess that wasting my limited funds for modern technology don't seem to be important to me. Need a new bow for my fiddle and a jug of inspireation worse than that stuff.
Response by NoraWI at 2010-03-08 18:03:48
Don't throw those CDs away, Dale! Hang them up in the garden. They do a great job of spooking the deer!!!

I agree with Nora. Where does the madness end? We just get used to one format, and the next "best" thing comes along. I'm all for progress, and I can appreciate the marketing pressure if you're trying to run a business, but just exactly what is the point? I'll stick with good old fashioned email and forums such as this, and keep my face planted in a real book, letting the twits do their thing to their hearts desire. BTW is it any wonder why we have threats such as NAIS, when all of these people today are so willing to give so much of their information away? Do none of them learn from history what happened to people when others had excessive information on them?
Response by Uncle Joe at 2010-03-08 19:42:54
So you don't want to join facebook and visit the Rural Heritage page there? You want to simply continue using the front porch as you always have?

What luck! That option has never been in jeopardy.

For those who already like and use facebook, Rural Heritage appears to be a welcome addition to their facebook favorites.

For those that don't already like and use it, life goes on as it always has.

I don't use it much myself, but know better than to characterize those that do as "twits." That's a dangerously broad brush with which to paint, I think.

I know for a fact it would get paint on a number of people whom I admire and respect, and who regularly provide valued contributions to porch conversations here.

Excuse my inappropriate use. Just what is the PC term for one who uses Twitter, if not a Twit?
Response by Uncle Joe at 2010-03-09 05:11:28
Question: "Just what is the PC term for one who uses Twitter, if not a Twit?"

Answer: A Tweeter. A message made on Twitter is known as a tweet.

Not: a silly annoying person : fool.

Uncle Joe I can aperciate your delima with the magazine. Thank you for keeping this option as well.
Response by Steve at 2010-03-09 07:20:50
You only give out as much info on facebook as you choose. It is also the the info that you fill out and last time I checked there was no "truth" police. I am glad to have another way communicate with RH as I really enjoy both the mag and the website. I do not have my own FB page but my wife does so I use hers. It is just a nice way to keep in touch with friends from all over. Thank you Uncle Joe for taking this next leap of faith. Keep up the great work

Norah is onto something there. That is some info we can all use. With dialup, there is no point in much of the newer technology. With spring not too far away, it's time for me to be doing something else anyway.
Response by Dionne at 2010-03-09 11:08:36
I searched for RH on facebook and found it a couple weeks ago - I'll have to look for a few others of you. I like facebook - I like being able to see all the pictures and videos, chatting and e-mails. But, then I'm a techno junkie - aka - "nerd." Yes - I do have it all sent to my phone, too... "sigh" But --- I wholeheartedly love the porch, right here, just like it is. It's two different worlds - and I'm happy to pop into both of them. Really appreciate all the work Uncle Joe does with the porch, the magazine and now the facebook site. You all are what keep me sane!

Heritage Farm I think that you are so correct! I went to town the outher day and stoped to get gas. When I went to pay for my gas, I was told to waite a min. cause he was sending a tweet. I lost it and walked outside for a couple min. to gain my composure. I asked a fellow that pulled up if he had a phonebook that I could use. He did and I called the owner of the station. Told him what had happened, he said to waite 10 min if I could. To my surprise in about 10 min the kid that told me to waite a min came out and told me that my gas was paid for! Bet that twit wont tweet on twitter for awhile, at least not at work. Just wish that I had filled my big tank lol.

I wondered why people wanted to sound like birds, then granddaughter told me about the new tweeting. This new stuff I don't know about,
