Last day of spearing
Posted by jwaller at 2010-02-28 21:05:32
Fish houses have to be off the lakes tomorrow. So went out spearing for the last time today. I will have no pickled fish or fish balls this spring. Got one the first time out and NOTHING since. Missed everyone.

Today, I missed on that came through right on the bottom. O.K. Long way down. Then I missed one that came RIGHT TO MY DECOY!!!! Head was between 5 and 6 inches wide (could measure by my decoy that he was just looking at). Must have weighed in the teens.

I missed him (or her) and could have probably poured a cup of coffee before taking a shot.

So I packed up my lunch, shut off the stove and went home. I'm done fishing!!!!!!!!

Got home and son came over to help get the house off the lake. Told my story of the day's fishing. Then checked the spear. IT IS SLIGHTY BENT!!!!!!!! Let go in the water and it will hook to one side.

Stood it up in the shop, checked the bend and it would hook about one foot off in about 4-5 feet.

Next winter!! Will get a new spear and save this one for a gaff.

Too bad about your spear fishing luck.Next year when you have a new spear and make the old one into a gaff will that make you an old bent gaffer or just an old gaffer?(chuckle)

Hit 30F yesterday. Heat wave. S'pose it'll snow or, worse, rain in the near future. My left hip and left knee is aching. Sure sign.
