Southern,Indiana Auction
Posted by BillE at 2010-02-23 22:07:21
From someone who has attended a few times, whats your opinion on the auction in southern Indiana coming in March. Good machinery, horses, or maybe not. What do you think?
Also what about motels at this late date? Any in the surronding towns or area that might be available? Again, your thoughts appreciated.

Can't speak to the spring auction, but I haven't missed the fall auction in many years. Should be worth your time. Carriages, harness, and small stuff are sold inside, farm equipment, wheels & wagons outside. I would expect all close motels are already booked--we make reservations for the next sale before we leave the last sale. You may have to go to Vincennes or Jasper, but the driving is not congested & nice scenery!

It's quite an affair with five or six rings going at the same time. There is a lot of good machinery and wagons, sleighs, carts, etc. As with any auction, there is a lot of stuff that's not worth having. As for the horses, although some folks will ooh and aah over anything with hair, the fact remains that there is usually only a handful of good ones for sale. The rest are rejects and have been brought to the auction for a purpose. Remember, it's an extremely rare occasion that anyone will consign the best horse in his barn.

We were there for the fall sale two years ago and had a great time and were there for Horse Progress days last summer. Lot's of stuff to look at and do without buying anything. Please let us know about prices especially the sleighs. Thanks.

Probably next to Waverly as one of the greatest places to find good machinery and equipment. Lots of wagons, carriages and such. Pioneer and other manufactures and dealers are there with everything under the sun. Motels were pretty well booked but we found one about 12 miles away, it wasn't the fanciest but it was only $45 for the night. Look and yee shall probably find. As for the horses, Davis county Indiana is home to more great pulling bred horse than probably anywhere in the country. Therefore the catolog was and is full of pulling prospects, older smooth mouth farm horses and a few broodmares. Definitely Waverly has a larger variety of good horses,(breeds and disciplines). I didn't find the horses I wanted there but it was definitly worth the trip.

We went to the spring sale two years ago and the fall sale last year. It is a very good sale. They will have anything you might want. I would go every year if it wasnt so far. Met allot of very nice people.

I never miss this sale. It's a great time. People from 30 states and Canada. Primitives, antiques, and anything horsedrawn will be there. An especially nice selection of American made buggys, and Canadian buggys if you want them. If your looking for a buggy horse there will be about 150 standardbreds sold thurs. at 5:30 pm. Amish bring in some good big drafts but they bring high prices so don't think you will steal the good horses. Again, everything from the best big horses to the littlest ponys and miniatures. It's worth going for the vendors and the atmosphere. Some of the best auction callers in the buisness. Have fun.
