pony hitch wagon

My boys got 3 ponies for their birthdays (against my will). A stud and 2 mares. So, I figured if they're here, they my as well earn their keep. I want to build a little hitch wagon for them. I had looked for running gear on-line but, couldn't find anything I like. I want something with bicycle tires but, all I see is stuff with what looks like wheel barrow tires. And I don't have the means the make my own. Where can I look ?

I made a neat one a few years ago. I used 1 1/2" sq steel tube as the frame. For the wheels I used motorcycle wheels and tires. There is used motorcycle parts junk yard here that the the guy sells s lot of nonroadable ones.Thye are heavier duty than bicycle wheels and will stand up to those ocasional mishaps that are common.
The only probelem I had was that the hubs were meant for a 13mm axle , so I had to make the spindles out of 1/2" bolts and shave the OD of the threads down a hair on a lathe.ThenI used flat washers and double nuts on the axle , or you could drill a hole and use cotter pin I guess . You can even get fancy and use the disc brakes if wanted.I made mine on the wheels like the old time hitch wagons had.
Watch out for those halflinger size hitch wagons they sell at sale rings that come down from Canada.
They look nice ,but are poorly built. The rear axle is just attached to the bed of the wagon with carriage bolts, there is no continuous frame. The 1st time you hit the brakes hard, the struts will off the bed out and you lose your whole back end.BTDT

Look at Northern Tool. They have all kinds of wheels.

Take Vince's advice, get the heavier wheels (motorcycle). You won't be sorry.

hey Wink,
Do have or have access to basic woodworking tools? If so, it's possible to build a buckboard with off the shelf materials fairly cheap. It's nothing fancy and some would find lots of bad points about it. But if it's just to do odd jobs and have fun with...
Let me know.

I built my first hitch wagon on a pony size running gear from Pioneer. It had 13in. pneumatic tires, and it was pulled by a span of 12hh pony mules. It worked out real well after I replaced the mechanical brakes with 4w hydraulics with a device to lock up the brakes for parking. It can be seen on my photo-site at
