Latest Horse Pull
Posted by KM at 2010-02-21 15:24:34
We had a good one! By my count there were 24 teams. Lots of nice horse flesh by anybodies standards. From the 16 hand massive chunks to the crossed with and elephant monsters. Even a couple of mule teams that gave it heck. Fun night all the way around.
Next Pull will be March 13th at 6:30pm at the Madison County indoor, Rexburg, Idaho. Should be a great event. The last one of the winter will be March 27th in the same place but will be an afternoon pull as part of a spring clinic for the draft horse association. Please come join if you are in striking distance.
It wouldn't be one of my posts without a shameless brag video. (GRIN)

Great Video, those guys have heart. It reminds me of a saying I heard years ago:
"Little is big when little is smart; first with the head, then with the heart."

KM, In order to brag you need to let everyone know how much weight was on that sled! Once again you did a great job with your ponies.

The problem is Zane, none of the family are exactly sure how much is on the boat. I thought it was 2750. The boys were thinking 2950. Then the weight of the boat. Guess it doesn't matter in the end it was just darn heavy.

Great little team always like watch ponies pull ( all heart). Do you pull on distance or percentage??
Most ponies around here ( MN,IA, WI) pull on percentage.

The weight I believe is 2750 as posted on the beginning of the video. What an AWESOME fun looking time.
Just curious, what range of weight do the best full sized drafts pull at the event?
I think it would be fun to enter a draft pull, but I only have a single. Wouldn't get very far with one horse:). Wish there was a class for that.

We pull a 20 foot pull like the big teams. This is for bragging rights only so we just come to play. The other teams went out on the previous load. I was ready to quit but the boys figured they had one more pull in them. The boys are the ones that work the team and care for them. My older son drove for the early loads and I drove the last 3 loads. The ponies get hot and he gets nervous when the weight goes up. I tell people these little ones need to go at a higher RPM to make the same pull. Not like a big diesel and all that torque. These little guys are on the red line most of the time.

The big boys pulled out that night at 8500 pounds.

We're still going to try and get up there before I get up to my ears in calving. We'll shoot for the March 13 pull and see what happens.
I'm hoping the bull I put over my heifers will calve easy enough that my brother can take a turn night checking for me.
That gray team is scrappy for sure.
