Horse pulling
Posted by KM at 2010-02-07 23:39:48
Saturday night a few of us got together to have a little therapy. Therapy sounds better than horse addiction. Anyhow there were 19 team by my count that showed up to play. My daughter was on the camera again an took a video or two. I then chopped them into the last 3 pulls for the little grey ponies. Not the greatest but we had fun playing. KM

Next pull will be on the 20th. Should be fun. I think it is 6:00 or 6:30 I am not sure. Hard to tell in that arena. You can hear in some places and not in others. Thanks for the kind words.

Fun to watch!!

Man, somebody forgot to tell them they are little. They even have that jitterbug that the big horses get when they were being hooked. Impressive. Nice team!! Looked like a great time.

Also, this would be a good time to ask a few questions on competition pulling.
1) Does it make a horse that you will farm and/or log with too jazzed up to use them in a competition for fun?
2) Where do you buy competition equipment? I have noticed that the eveners are different than regular logging ones, they usually have handles and an easier way to drop them down on the hook or something. Do most people design their own or buy them ready made?
3) Who makes sleds for pulling or are they also home fabricated by the best design that someone can think of?
4) Where are the pulling regluations found on the web?
I thought it might be a nice thing for a change ofr our saddle club to host a pull, but I don't know what all is involved to get started the right way.

1) Does it make a horse that you will farm and/or log with too jazzed up to use them in a competition for fun? Yes and no. It really depends on the horse. The grey horse is honest and doesn't seem to get hot but the more white horse gets buzzed up. My neighbor had a team you could pull and give wagon rides and a parade all on the same day. Just the way they were wired.
2) Where do you buy competition equipment? I have noticed that the eveners are different than regular logging ones, they usually have handles and an easier way to drop them down on the hook or something. Do most people design their own or buy them ready made? Yup you make your own or have it fabricated.
3) Who makes sleds for pulling or are they also home fabricated by the best design that someone can think of? As long as the boat is stout enough then it really doesn't matter as every one is using the same one.
4) Where are the pulling regluations found on the web? There are different rules for different associations and pullers groups. Again it really does not matter as we all play by the same ones.

Wow Kari! You have those little gray horses working great. Lot of time and skill went into that pair. Doesn't seem that long ago when you were breaking them and now look at them. Nice job.

The darker horse is welsh and papered. The white horse is a pony of unknown origins. He is a game little bugger but not as talented as the grey. He gives you all he has got every time but he is just not the athlete the other one is. We cheat the white horse a 1/2" on the evener to give him a little advantage.
The boys are the ones that are feeding and legging them up. I drive them on occasion but not near the number of miles as the kids do. The little boy warmed them up and the older son pulled the first couple of loads. Then the adrenalin gets to him and he hands me the lines.

This is warming up. The boys were having more fun than the ponies. KM

Do the pullers get upset when you beat them in the log skid because they are too dumb to have a swivel in their grab hook? yes.
Do the pullers talk to you after you smoke them in the log skid? no.
Did the pullers ever get it? no.
Been there ... done that.
By the grace of God, not all pullers are knuckleheads. This includes the equine part of the pullers.

KM good looking team. I have had a 47 inch hinney around here fora few years, he is aproaching 20 now, have used hom for buggy rides, ect. Been hearing you rant about this little team so I recently bought a 3 yo 50 inch pony mare. She dosen't know much, just been under saddle, but she has a willing mind and wants to please. Just wanted you to know that you continue to unspire some of us that little ones can work to.

Heart they don't lack. ;) I tell people all the time that say they wish their big horses had the same heart these little guys do. I tell them be careful what you wish for... PONY is a 4 letter word.
I like the little grey horse better myself. He is better put together and just better all the way around. He is turning 5 this year so he is finally getting an attention span longer than 30 seconds. He is arrogance in a pony body. When I turned him out for the first time he ran right up to my shire mare, backed up and gave her both feet 3 times quick. The old mare reached over and picked him up by the mane with her teeth and gave him a fling. It was funny for all but him. He just doesn't get the herd dynamic thing. The white horse knows his place and acts appropriate. The grey one is always buggered up from a bite or kick. I keep thinking someday he will learn. The 8 horses are on 10 acres so it isn't like he has to get in trouble but he manages. He is also the one the kids ride and drive single. A pretty talented little guy.
I have threatened to post them for sale and let the kids start a new team. Right now unbroke ponies are free for the asking. Well broke ones are bringing a couple of thousand to the right grandpa. We are going to work critters might as well make the hobby pay a little.

KM you forgot the boat on that one hook?
Response by Wayne Wi. at 2010-02-10 14:15:15
Will go to http://www.horsepull.com. You can find rules for horse pulling there. These are for the Wi.Horse Pullers Assc. They may very state to state.
Response by KM at 2010-02-10 14:19:16
We broke the chain on that end of the boat. That was the reason we hooked going the other way. At this point we were the only team left so we just hooked on that next load because we could. The boys wanted to try the next load but I told them we were done. They gave us an honest pull on a good load no need to sour them. KM

I had a span of pony mules that were pullin' Jose's. On a club drive one time a fella with a 6-up of Belgian mules asked me if he could go ahead of me up a long steep hill so's he wouldn't hafta hold his mules back, so I said surenuff. When I passed him 'bout 1/2 way up, he just shook his head in disbelief. I lost one of the little mules 4 yrs ago at 32, her team-mate is still goin' strong at 38. She was hi-point cart mule at the show where we retired her 3 yrs ago. KM I love the try in them ponies of yours.
Response by kman at 2010-02-11 23:30:48
You should be proud of the boys and the ponies. I never get tired of seeing those little buggars get down and pull. I wish you'd have videoed those little mules' last pull. Talk about guts the littlest ones at that pull had the mostest.
Response by KM at 2010-02-12 06:47:05
Kevin,
I am with you on that last pull of those mules. They stayed on that load and kept moving. I thought he was crazy to come back but he did. Guess he knows his mules better than I do. ;) Heck of a pull. They all but stopped moving a couple of times I wish I had a video of that as well. I would have loved to put it on a big screen to play for my big team. Show them what is possible. KM
