?? Terry Nichols ??
Posted by Sharon Anderson -- AWESOME ASS ACRES -- Etowah, TN at 2010-02-04 22:33:20
I was wondering about the mule trainer, Terry Nichols? I think he lived in OK. Is he still around? My son and I were present for a series of training sessions he conducted in Montgomery, AL several years ago. I was very impressed, kept up with his articles in magazines, but then lost track of him. I notice that there is a T. Nichols on the forum...would this be Terry??? Whatever the case, I hope he and his wife's doing well...I'd love to catch up with any articles, etc. that he might be involved with! Thanks!

Sharon.....I am the one and the same. I thought I reconized your name from somewhere. I think that was about 10 or 11 years ago. I really enjoyed that deal there at Montgomery, the people were great, the weather was great and the people that had me there were great to deal with. I can't say that about every place I went around this country. I got tired of the road, bought a ranch in S.E. Oklahoma and pretty much holed up there just tending to business. Hope you and yours are doing fine.

My wife misses the articles your wife wrote as well.

My wife and I have had many Mules, have shown at Bishop, California Mule Days and many other places.
We as well would like to have copies of any information on the training of Mules. I have to say for the benefit of those thinking of owning a Mule that it would help them if they first had some experience owning training , a Horse and Donkey.
We have found that a Mule will think like a Horse one minute then a Donkey the next. I'm 70 yrs young and would only ride a trained Mule, or Donkey.

R.Abbott....I am really glad you got something out of it, that is what it was all about, trying to help folks but the most important thing, you absorbed it and took it home and applied it and succeded. That is what always made the hours on the road and getting worn down to a frazzle worth it.

Mr.Nichols,
I am no mule trainer but have a few that I have used your methods and bits on that are not for sale. The mistake I have made is loaning out your bits to supposed friends and not getting them back. I had purchased them from Wyoming outdoor supply. They don't send me their catalog anymore and I guess they are out of business. Your wife's colum used to make my sides hurt with laughter when ever I received my Western Mule magazine. She has good sense of humor. Reading your articles brought back memories of my own experiences and I often thought, now this is going to hurt. Hope you and the Mrs. are happy and healthy in body, mind, and spirit. What do you think of obama's carbon tax on cows? The Utah farm burea has figured that it will effect everyone that has 25 or more head and will cost about 175 per head in taxes on the cows' carbon emissions. Wish I was joking but I'm not.

Kolob...Glad you had good success with your mules. Don't know if Wyoming Outdoor Ind. is still operating or not. I lost contact with them. I had some fellows building my bits and was supplying W.O.I. with them. I desinged them and built them myself until time on the road didn't permit it and I had to teach some other fellows how to do it. I quit dealing with it all together but was always getting calls for the bits so I am back to building them myself again. If you don't get yours back and need some you can always get a hold me and we can fix that. Next time make them put down a deposit. Yea, my wife has a good sense of humor, she would have to have to stay hooked up with me as long as she has, not far from a half a century and it ain't all been easyWhat do I think of Obama's carbon tax on cows??? I don't even want to go there. I try to stay away from politics on things like this chat board but I will say this, and it is only my opinion, next elections we should vote out every last politian, good, bad or indifferent and get in some new blood. Maybe, just maybe those politicians might get the idea that us tax payers are not quite as dumb as they think we are and maybe the new ones would look at things from a little different angle. New blood never hurts anything. I think that should put it in a fairly polite way what I think of his carbon tax and all of the other things they are trying to impose on us including NAIS. Hope everything is going good for you in Utah.

So Joe get this guy to write some mule article for. I'm a horse person myself, mainly because I don''t want an animal that is smarter then I am. But good trainiers are good trainers.

I was wondering if you are the same Terry Nichols who makes headstalls? My Aunt Jane had one made when she was in Montana, and I have never seen anthing like it. It is one eared and made from harness leather about one inch wide, but the ear piece part is not round; it comes down the side of the bridle and connects. Also, there is no cheek strap. I would love to purchase one, but have looked and been unsuccessful in finding anything like it.

I recently had a fellow in Anderson ride my mule for a couple of weeks to help me iron out a problem. While she was there he used a Terry Nichols Headsetter bit and said she responded well to it. Where can I find this bit to purchase. I have rode horses for many years but this is my first mule. Certainly has been a learning experience....but I love her and she loves me so I know we will be a team one day! Thanks for your help.

Hi Terry. Probable don't remember me. I worked in the feedlots in OK, TX and KS for some time back in the 90s. Visited with you a few times in Buffalo, and ran into you different places. Always enjoyed visiting with you and reading your articles. Glad I came upon this, I was wondering just the other day where you were now.
