If they can't run away pulling a half dozen of them, I'd get rid of them.

I'll bet they'll be alright. I like how Dale put's it. He must have worked some mules somewhere along the line.
I have a pair of mules just like what you have. They are pulling 1300 lb. bales out of the stackyard for me. I did work them on a lighter job and they're hard though.
One thing I've heard is that you can work a mule too hard, too early. Most of mine don't hit the heavy pulling until they're four. But the load you describe shouldn't do much but make then want to understand that 'Whoa!' is a good thing. Really reinforce stopping and standing.

Two 18 wheeler tires is nothing to them at 3. Bet they run off with them. They are old enough to start.

Jack Stroude always used two front end loader tires. They are about 300 lbs each. I had two 3 year old halflinger mules trotting with them

Buy Jack Strode's Mule School DVD from Rural Heritage. Great tool to help you start.

I've got his video and can't remember if he used the tires on the road or just gravel.
