. Small-scale diversified operation with a focus on sustainable integrated
market gardening and livestock production.
- Source of power: 4 horses.
- Horses are used for: all field work including plowing, harrowing,
cultivating, potato hilling and digging, mowing, spreading manure,
hay making, grain drilling and harvesting; wagon work including harvesting;
general woods work.
- Acreage: 63; 7 in cultivation of market garden crops, 15
in hay and pasture.
- Other livestock: hogs, chickens.
- Skills offered in: draft horse care and applied teamster skills; involvement in nearly all aspects of the farm, especially vegetable production, biological soil fertility, cover cropping, weed control, pasture management, horse-powered loose hay making, marketing through our on-farm CSA, general construction, livestock management, start-up considerations.
- Work hours: 10-11 hrs/day, 5 1/2 days/wk.
- Terms: room and board in exchange for learning and work;
2-3 internships positions March to mid-December. Please note that our positions have been filled for the 2010 season, but feel free to apply for the 2011 season.
- Stipend: $500/month plus $50 bonus/month.
- Accommodations: simple one-room rustic cabins, all food staples
are provided including basic organic kitchen staples and all-you-can-eat
farm produce; some meals are shared, some are independent.
- Apprentice must have: minimum one year of commercial vegetable production experience and a serious interest in a career in farming. Apprentices must have a quick mind, good observation skills, and good mental retention, a respectful and positive attitude, energy, endurance, and enthusiasm, an eagerness to learn; hardiness to rustic living and physically demanding work; patience, honesty, and a commitment to communication.
